Harrisburg Opera Association presented MADAMA BUTTERFLY at the newly erected Whitaker Center for Science and the Arts. This marked the first time that HOA produced a production on their main stage. Additionally, HOA was designated as one of the original 12 resident arts organizations and the sole opera company. The Whitaker Center was the effort of a collaboration starting in the 1980s of local community leaders, business leaders, city planners, art associations and government officials who worked together to satisfy the state capitol's need to have a center that "would contain a fine arts museum, a new home for the Museum of Scientific Discovery, and a 400-600-seat theater with workshop, rehearsal, and studio space."
